Shores Centre Marks 20 Years of Community Impact in Withernsea

Withernsea’s Shores Centre has officially marked 20 years of serving the local community, providing essential support in employment, skills training, financial advice, and well-being services. Established in 2005, the centre—officially known as the Southern Holderness Resource Centre—has become a cornerstone for residents seeking guidance and assistance.

A Celebration of Two Decades of Impact

To commemorate this milestone, the Shores Centre underwent a refurbishment and hosted a special anniversary event on March 7, 2025. The event brought together trustees, supporters, and community members to reflect on the centre’s journey and acknowledge the people who have contributed to its success.

Chief Executive Jayne Nendick expressed heartfelt gratitude for the continued support, describing the event as a “celebration of appreciation.” She emphasized how the centre has thrived through the efforts of volunteers, staff, and local partnerships.

Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future

The celebration also paid tribute to Jenny Pattison, the late former chair of the charity, whose commitment to the centre and community left a lasting impact. Jenny’s motto, “if I have the ability, I have the responsibility,” remains a guiding principle for the centre’s work today.

Over the years, the Shores Centre has adapted to meet changing community needs. Recently, in response to the cost of living crisis, it launched initiatives such as distributing heated gilets and winter packs to help residents cope with rising energy costs. The overwhelming response reinforced the centre’s importance in improving the well-being of local people.

Tackling Food Poverty in East Riding

Beyond Withernsea, the Shores Centre has played a key role in the East Riding Food Poverty Alliance, a regional initiative dedicated to tackling food insecurity. The centre has worked alongside other community organizations to ensure families and individuals in need have access to nutritious food. Through food parcel distributions, affordable meal programs, and partnerships with local food banks, Shores has helped provide a vital safety net for those struggling to make ends meet.

By collaborating with the East Riding Council and other support networks, the centre has contributed to a long-term strategy aimed at reducing food poverty and promoting sustainable solutions, such as budgeting workshops and cooking classes.

Looking Ahead

The Shores Centre’s 20th anniversary is not just a reflection on past achievements but also a commitment to continuing its vital work in Withernsea and beyond. As the community faces new challenges, the centre remains steadfast in its mission to bring people together, provide practical support, and strengthen social connections.

As Jayne Nendick put it, “We’re in this together. By working and supporting each other, we make Withernsea stronger.”

With a strong foundation of community spirit and collaboration, the Shores Centre is set to continue its invaluable work for many more years to come.
