Countdown to Kindness: Giving Back This Christmas

As the festive season approaches, many of us look forward to opening our Advent calendars each day and finding a little treat. But have you heard of the Reverse Advent Calendar? It’s a simple, heart-warming way to spread kindness and support people in need this Christmas.

Where It All Began

The idea of a Reverse Advent Calendar started a few years ago in the UK. Instead of taking something out of a calendar each day, people began to put something in — one food item, toiletry, or household essential — each day during December. By Christmas, you have a box full of donations ready to help local families who are struggling.

Why It Matters

Many families rely on food banks, especially during winter when bills and costs go up. Your donations help make sure people don’t have to choose between heating their home and eating a meal.
Every tin of soup, packet of pasta, or bar of soap can make a real difference to someone’s Christmas.

What to Include

Food banks need long-life, non-perishable items — things that don’t go off quickly. Here are some great examples:

  • Tinned meals (stews, curries, or spaghetti)
  • Tinned fruit and vegetables
  • Pasta, rice, and noodles
  • UHT milk or long-life juice
  • Cereal and porridge oats
  • Biscuits or treats
  • Toiletries like toothpaste, soap, and deodorant

If you can, try to include a mix of food and basic essentials. Every item counts!

Who It Helps

Your Reverse Advent Calendar donations support local families and individuals who are struggling to afford food. Food banks often see more visitors in December, so your help couldn’t come at a better time. You’re not just giving food — you’re giving hope and comfort during a tough season.

Where to Donate

Once your box is full, check where your nearest food bank or pantry is. You can:

Be sure to drop off your box before Christmas so it can reach families in time for the holidays! We are asking for people to collect between 1st-16th December, so that you have time to drop off the donations and they can be handed out before Christmas.

Small Acts, Big Difference

This year, why not start your own Reverse Advent Calendar with family, friends, or your school? It’s a great way to give back and make Christmas brighter for others. Together, we can help make sure everyone has something to celebrate this season.
